Recipe for 1-2 Year Olds: Homemade Ice Pops
Ice pops are a a simple, healthy, and delicious treat your little one will love.
Ingredients and materials:
- Fresh fruit (like strawberries or bananas)
- 100% fruit juice (we suggest no added sugar)
- Ice pop molds (or ice cube trays with popsicle sticks!)
Instructions:
- Cut the fruit into small, safe-to-eat pieces for your child.
- Fill popsicle molds with the cut-up fruit, then pour in the fruit juice.
- If you are using ice cube trays, pour the mixture in and add a popsicle stick halfway through.
- Freeze for a few hours until set.
- Release your homemade popsicles from the molds and enjoy!
Recipe for 3-4 Year Olds: Veggie Faces
Making veggie faces is not only a fun way to prepare a snack, but it also encourages your kids to eat their vegetables. It allows them to explore their sense of taste as different vegetables have stronger or more unique flavors, and their sense of touch describing different textures.
Ingredients:
- Whole wheat bread
- Cream Cheese or hummus
- Vegetable medley (ex: cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, carrot sticks, bell pepper strips, olives)
Instructions:
- Wash and prepare the vegetables.
- Cut the vegetables into thin, manageable pieces. Take extra care to avoid choking hazards for smaller children.
If you're comfortable, allow your little one to assist with preparing the veggies, under your supervision. The more involved they are, the more they’ll participate in the eating!
- Spread cream cheese or hummus on a slice of bread.
- Let your child arrange the veggies on the bread to create fun faces or designs. This is an excellent opportunity to talk about different vegetables, their colors, their textures, and tastes!
