Your baby's first summer is a perfect time to introduce sensory play.
Sensory play helps them start understanding the world around them through touch, taste, sight, sound, and smell. Here's how you can encourage sensory exploration and play with your baby before they turn one:
Outdoor Play Mat
The feeling of the breeze, the sight of trees and sky, the sounds of nature—all form part of sensory play. Set up a play mat outside with some favorite toys. Narrate what they’re seeing with a soothing tone.
“You’re feeling the breeze!”
“You noticed the branch moving."
This is called “sportscasting”, and it helps children build confidence as you participate and narrate what they are experiencing.
Don't forget to capture these moments in your daily journaling updates!
Nature Walk
It's never too early to start exploring nature! Take your baby for a walk in the park or around your neighborhood. Allow them to feel the grass, leaves, or tree bark under your supervision. Run your child’s hand along smooth and rough parts of a tree so they can feel the different textures. Use words like “smooth," “rough," or "bumpy" to introduce this language.
What words do they use to express themselves? What are their expressions when they feel these different textures? Capture them in a photo or a journal entry.
Musical Moments
Introduce your baby to the world of music. Rattles and other baby-friendly instruments are intended for just this! Even something as simple as shaking a tightly-lidded jar with rice can become a fascinating activity for a baby.
And of course, don't forget the power of your own voice—sing to them, whether it's a traditional lullaby or your favorite pop song. It's all music to their ears!
Remember their favorite Summer'23 music here.
Your baby's safety always comes first! Ensure all activities and materials do not pose a choking hazard, and are age-appropriate for your little one.
